It offers four gain levels from 36 to 72 dB, adjustable input loading and a very low noise floor, in a compact ZEN 3 series chassis (158 x 115 x 35 mm, 456 g).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts range of settings lets it keep up as the system grows: from a first moving magnet cartridge to low-output moving coils, without changing the unit.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eFour gain settings and independently adjustable loading\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere are four gain positions: 36 dB for MM, 48 dB for high-output MC, 60 dB for low-output MC and 72 dB for very low-output MC. The new loading button selects input impedance separately from gain, so the best match can be found for each cartridge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the MM and high-output MC positions the input is 47 kΩ, with 100 or 200 pF capacitance; in the low and very low-output MC positions the available values are 1 kΩ, 400 Ω and 100 Ω.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA subsonic filter that removes warp and keeps the bass\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eConventional subsonic filters cut the bass of the music together with the rumble of warped records. The one in the ZEN Phono 3, developed by iFi since the first iPhono of 2012, recognises the very low frequency vertical modulation typical of a warped record and filters only that, without attenuating bass or adding group delay.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe RIAA equalisation curve is rebuilt with multiple TDK C0G capacitors in parallel, chosen for stability and low distortion, and stays within ±0.15 dB between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. Channel separation exceeds 75 dB at 1 kHz in all modes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003e-151 dBV noise, balanced output and clean power\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eMeasured equivalent input noise is -151 dBV, helped by an isolated, clean 1.2 MHz power supply. The stated signal-to-noise ratio reaches 91 dB(A) in the MM position.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBesides the RCA outputs there is a balanced output, with a response from 20 Hz to 80 kHz (-3 dB). The 5 V power adapter is supplied along with an RCA cable; the SilentPower iPower2 can be used to lower noise further.
