Dragon: Mythical Creatures interconnect in solid PSS silver with Level 7 Noise-Dissipation
AudioQuest Dragon is the analogue interconnect at the top of the Mythical Creatures series. It uses solid Perfect-Surface Silver for the signal conductors and for the noise drain wires alike, and is offered with RCA or XLR connectors.
Sold as a pair: the pack holds the two cables for the right and left channels.
Conductors and insulation
The conductors are single wires of Perfect-Surface Silver (PSS). The solid-wire structure avoids electrical and magnetic interplay between strands, and the silver surface keeps grain-boundary distortion in check. Insulation differs by polarity: the positive conductors run in FEP air tubes (FEP Air-Tube), where metal and insulation hardly touch and FEP provides a very favourable dielectric constant; the negative ones have a deliberately more lossy insulation, with neither air nor FEP, appropriate to the different task of the return path.
ZERO-Tech, DBS and Level 7 Noise-Dissipation
ZERO-Tech removes the electrostatic field between the signal conductors: the cable has no characteristic impedance, so no mismatch arises with the circuits upstream and downstream, radio-frequency noise is dissipated linearly across every octave and transients are not compressed. The 72 V Dielectric-Bias System (DBS) biases the dielectric and lowers its noise; on the XLR version the DBS pack is doubled (Dual-72v) to preserve full isolation between the conductors. Compared with the Level 6 of the other models in the series, Level 7 replaces the silver-plated drain wires with drains in solid PSS silver, alongside the resistive mesh of carbon and graphene and the Direction-Controlled conductors.
Terminations and lengths
RCA for unbalanced connections, XLR for equipment with balanced circuits. The plugs are very high purity Red Copper with silver applied straight onto it; the grounded, copper-plated shells stop RF noise from coupling capacitively into the conductors. Lengths: 0.5 m, 0.75 m, 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 2.5 m, 3 m, 4 m, 5 m and 6 m.
