Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges are essential components of turntables used to play vinyl records. These heads are called "Moving Magnet" because they have a moving coil attached to a magnet that generates the electrical signal.
MM cartridges are usually preferred by music enthusiasts who want accurate and detailed sound at an affordable price. These cartridges are cheaper than MC (Moving Coil) cartridges and easier to install.
The main strengths of the MM cartridges include good sound performance , a wide frequency response and high sensitivity. They are capable of faithfully reproducing a wide range of musical genres, from classical to pop to rock. Additionally, they require less amplification than MC cartridges, meaning they can easily be used with many types of amplifiers and pre-amplifiers.
The main differences between MM and MC cartridges are in sound quality and price. MC cartridges offer superior sonic output, with greater accuracy and detail, but tend to be more expensive. Furthermore, MC cartridges require a phono amplifier with an input specifically for MC cartridges, unlike MM cartridges which can operate with a standard phono amplifier.
