RCA subwoofer cable with solid silver-plated conductors and Hyperlitz coax geometry
Greyhound is a signal cable made for the link between the subwoofer output of a receiver or amplifier and the RCA input of an active subwoofer. It is a single cable, designed for the often long runs that separate the electronics from the bass speaker.
Its construction brings together four technical choices: solid silver-plated copper conductors, foamed polyethylene insulation, a noise-dissipating shield and connectors fitted without solder.
Conductors and geometry
The conductors are solid-core, with a silver coating equal to 0.5%. A solid wire avoids the interaction between strands that, in a multi-strand conductor, is a source of distortion. Silver on the surface works where the highest frequencies flow, bringing the behaviour of the cable close to that of an all-silver conductor at a manufacturing cost near that of copper.
The Hyperlitz coax geometry arranges eight negative conductors in a ring, wound in a spiral around one positive conductor of larger gauge. The outcome is a generous overall cross-section, with low resistance and limited skin effect.
Insulation and noise reduction
The insulation is foamed polyethylene (Foamed-PE): its high air content cuts the energy that the material soaks up and then gives back late as distortion. The shield uses the Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation system, which intercepts a large share of radio-frequency interference ahead of the layer tied to ground, so the ground reference of the equipment stays stable.
Terminations and lengths
The RCA plugs are gold-plated and attached by cold welding: contact is achieved through high pressure, with no solder involved. The lengths on sale are 2 m, 3 m, 5 m, 8 m, 12 m, 16 m and 20 m, covering both a subwoofer beside the system and one placed at the far end of the room.
