The ultimate tool for subwoofer integration
JL Audio CR-1 is an analog active crossover for two-channel systems: it splits the signal between subwoofer and main loudspeakers, with a low-pass filter and a high-pass filter, each adjusted on its own.
CR-1 combines tuning controls for the subwoofer and for the satellites with a signal path that is analog throughout. Its layout of inputs and outputs suits the studio, the mastering room and two-channel listening at home, and it can be mounted in a rack.
Key features
- Linkwitz-Riley filters, low-pass plus high-pass, at 12 or 24 dB/octave
- Crossover point from 30 to 150 Hz, with separate front-panel controls
- Filter damping control (variable Q)
- Subwoofer/satellite balance of ±12 dB
- Subwoofer output in mono, L+R or stereo
- Balanced and unbalanced inputs and outputs
- Bypass function for dual-use systems
- Rack mounting
Precision filters
At the heart of the unit is a pair of Linkwitz-Riley filter banks, one low-pass and one high-pass. The filter frequencies of the analog circuit are set by multiplying DACs with monolithically matched ratios: compared with conventional solutions, tracking is better and the balance between left and right channel far more exact. Slope, frequency and damping are set from the front panel, and each output has its own mute button.
Selected parts
To keep distortion and noise to a minimum the audio circuit, entirely analog, uses high-grade parts: 1% precision resistors, audio op-amps with JFET inputs, film-and-foil polypropylene capacitors and metallized polypropylene capacitors.
Inputs, outputs and bypass
The main stereo inputs and those for an already managed bass signal come both unbalanced (RCA) and balanced (XLR/TRS combo sockets); the outputs for satellites and for subwoofers are on RCA, TRS and XLR. In systems used for both two-channel music and multichannel, the bypass function sends the signal from the dedicated rear input straight to the subwoofer outputs, so switching between modes needs no rewiring.
Supplied accessories
The box contains the crossover, the power cord, four RCA shorting plugs and two tabs for rack mounting.
