A two-way in-ceiling loudspeaker from the Motion XT CI range, supplied as a pair: a 203 mm woven-Kevlar woofer and a Folded Motion XT tweeter with controlled dispersion, for music around the house and for home cinema.
MOTION XTC8: how it is built
XTC8 pairs the Folded Motion XT tweeter, the largest of its family with an aperture of 32 x 61 mm, with a 203 mm woofer whose cone is woven Kevlar. A Nomex layer bonded behind the cone cuts resonance and ringing, and the chassis is sturdier than on Motion CI models, much as a better cabinet helps a conventional speaker. The published figures: 51 Hz to 25 kHz, 91 dB sensitivity, crossover at 2,270 Hz, a 4 ohm load that 8 ohm amplifiers can drive, and power from 50 to 300 watts.
The tweeter concentrates its output into a fan of 30° by 80°. Sound lands where people listen and fades quickly at the edges, so fewer reflections colour it and less spills into other parts of the house. That behaviour is useful in open-plan spaces and under sloping ceilings, and in object-based systems such as Dolby Atmos, Auro3D and DTS:X, where overhead channels have to stay intelligible at a distance.
The cut-out is 235 mm in diameter and 140 mm of depth is needed; the finished speaker measures 263 mm across. Its sprung terminals have a 4.5 mm hole and take bananas, pins or stripped cable. The slim micro-perforated grille can be painted and fixes magnetically. Separate accessories include a pre-installation bracket, a square grille and a rear enclosure that can be added after the event to contain sound heading for the floor above; left without it, the woofer uses the whole ceiling void and gives more bass.
