The compact BBC monitor for near-field listening
LS3/5A is sold as a pair: two 15-ohm sealed loudspeakers for voices, monitoring and smaller rooms.
LS3/5A is supplied as one complete pair, so the package contains both left and right loudspeakers. Musical Fidelity revisits the two-way sealed BBC design with a 110 mm polypropylene mid/bass driver and 19 mm dome tweeter. Its 82.5 dB sensitivity does not reward casually low amplifier power, while the nominal 15-ohm impedance is an easy electrical load. It is chosen for close listening, small spaces and vocal image rather than the physical bass of a tower.

Small volume, clear priorities
The 19 x 30.5 x 16.5 cm sealed box favours controlled roll-off and intelligibility over extreme extension. In a home studio, generous desktop or intimate lounge, its strength is believable scale for voices and acoustic instruments. Cinema or high-level electronic music may justify a carefully integrated subwoofer.
Amplification: sensitivity matters more than impedance
Fifteen ohms is benign, but 82.5 dB requires headroom for realistic levels. A clean moderate-power amplifier is preferable to a weak model driven into clipping. Claimed handling is 20-150 W; quality and control matter more than the highest number.
Stands and wall distance
Monitor Stand 700 raises the tweeter correctly and provides a stable base. A sealed cabinet tolerates a wall better than many ports, but should not be pressed against it: small movements alter bass reinforcement and depth. Channel symmetry and toe-in require adjustment in the room.
Why choose it over LS5/9
LS3/5A occupies less space and works at shorter range; LS5/9 offers greater sensitivity, pressure and scale through its 210 mm driver. The former is an intimate, selective monitor, the latter fills a larger room. Natural rosewood and black cloth retain the historic appearance.
