SFC12-SW: two cones that cancel each other's vibration
An in-wall subwoofer that really pushes ends up shaking the wall. The SFC12-SW (Seismic Force-Canceling 12) tackles this with two drivers mounted in opposition, so that the mechanical forces of one offset those of the other: the layout Paradigm has already used in the Signature Sub, the Persona Sub and the Persona 9H. The outcome is deep bass, 20 to 150 Hz with extension to 15 Hz (DIN), without dumping energy into the structure of the house.
The two rectangular Carbon-X cones, very stiff and well damped, measure 95 x 390 mm. The moulded-on ART surround, a Paradigm patent, allows long travel with little distortion; each motor uses computer-optimised super-neodymium magnets and a 25 mm six-layer voice coil on a Kapton former, with twin Nomex spiders. All of it sits in a one-piece die-cast chassis, with a reinforced baffle and aluminium clamps.
It is designed for retrofit work: it mounts in an existing wall, provided there are at least 28.4 litres of volume and 95 mm of depth behind it. The slim, frameless perforated metal grille can be painted. Amplification is external: Paradigm specifies a single SFC12-SW per X-500 or two per SVX-1202, for a peak power of 400 W. Design and manufacture take place at the Paradigm plant near Toronto, Canada.
