This version of the Signature SUB 2 is set apart by its black lacquer cabinet finish: beneath the lacquer it remains the hexagonal sealed active subwoofer with six 254 mm drivers and an Ultra-Class-D amplifier, intended for reference systems.
Signature SUB 2 - Finitura Speciale: lacquered cabinet and VCDA engineering
The special finish concerns appearance alone: the hexagonal cabinet is lacquered in black, a glossy skin that brings this large subwoofer closer to a piece of furniture, which is what Paradigm aimed for when designing it. Engineering and performance are those of the Signature SUB 2 in its other versions. With grilles and feet it measures 62.2 × 60.3 × 56.8 cm and weighs 106 kg; the grilles are fixed, on account of the power and sound pressure involved.
Inside, six 254 mm drivers work in pairs on three sides following the VCDA scheme: the opposing mechanical thrusts balance out and the cabinet does not vibrate, to the point that the maker describes a subwoofer that moves air and not itself. The mineral-loaded polypropylene cones with RCR ribs, the overmoulded thermoplastic foam edges and the ten-layer 76 mm voice coils are conceived for extreme excursions. On axis the subwoofer covers 9 to 260 Hz within ±3 dB and reaches 7 Hz (DIN).
The Ultra-Class-D amplifier does without a transformer and relies on power factor correction to make the most of the electrical supply: at 240 V it reaches 4,500 W RMS continuous and 9,000 W dynamic peak, and it accepts voltages between 108 and 265 V. Optically isolated inputs cut noise and short-circuit protection acts within 10 microseconds. The picture is completed by RCA and balanced XLR inputs, a 35 to 150 Hz low-pass filter that can be bypassed, variable phase and the PBK kit for room correction.
