The balanced preamplifier able to command power amplifiers and long cables
M8s PRE is a pure Class A preamplifier with MM/MC phono, separate channel supplies and low-impedance RCA/XLR outputs.
M8s PRE is the control centre of a separate M8 system. Two XLR, five RCA and a tape loop gather analogue sources; the phono stage accepts MM and MC. Its path is balanced and runs in pure Class A, while separate transformers power the two channels. Low-impedance outputs are designed to drive M8s 500S or a pair of M8s 700M units through long cables. No DAC is included, so digital sources require external conversion.

The partner changes system scale
With M8s 500S it forms a 500 W-per-channel stereo pair; with two 700M units each loudspeaker receives its own 700 W monoblock. The preamplifier remains identical, so load, room and modularity determine power choice. Monoblocks increase separation while requiring twice the space, sockets and cost. M8s PRE permits both routes.
Digital volume control, analogue signal path
Volume is digitally controlled for precision and repeatable settings, but analogue signals are not converted to digital. Display and control allow consistent adjustment between sources. The distinction matters: "digital volume" describes command of the attenuator, not DSP inserted into the music. The tape loop also provides fixed output for recording.
Integrated phono for one principal turntable
The MM/MC stage connects a compatible cartridge directly. For several arms, historic curves or detailed adjustment, M8x Vinyl remains the appropriate partner and occupies a line input. Integrating phono in the preamplifier instead simplifies a one-turntable system and reduces cables in the most sensitive path.
Home cinema without duplicating front speakers
HT bypass gives the AV processor front-channel volume control and forwards the signal to the selected power amplifier. For music M8s PRE resumes command. The same front speakers serve stereo and cinema without external switches. A 12 V trigger coordinates power amplifiers and is particularly useful with two monoblocks.
Why not choose M8 Xi
M8 Xi provides preamplification and 550 W per channel in one chassis with fewer cables and lower total cost. M8s PRE is justified when power amplification must be chosen, placed near the speakers or upgraded independently. Source quality and rack organisation should match the freedom gained.
