A 2.5-way floorstanding speaker, sold as a pair: two 5 inch carbon and glass-fibre composite woofers, a 1 inch silk tweeter, a rear reflex port and a sand-ballasted base. It calls for amplifiers of 20 to 200 W.
Speaker Box 12 E Carbon: two and a half ways
There are three drivers: a 1 inch silk dome and two 5 inch units with glass-fibre and carbon diaphragms. In the two-and-a-half-way layout both reproduce bass, but the lower one stops there and leaves the midrange to the other: the result is fuller low end, able to fill the room, without weighing down voices.
The very rigid MDF enclosure rests on a separate chamber packed with sand, which lowers the centre of gravity, soaks up vibration and steadies a column 1,100 mm tall. The baffle shows no screws and the grilles, included, attach with magnets. The model comes in several finishes.
Pro-Ject quotes a level response from 42 Hz to 20 kHz and 89 dB sensitivity into 4 ohms, with warm, clear mids and solid bass. The terminal panel is doubled: you can bi-wire, or bi-amp by giving woofers and tweeter their own amplifiers for extra clarity and a lower risk of distortion. At least 20 W a channel are needed; the matches named are the Stereo Box DS3 and the MaiA DS3.
